Renault to cut 7,500 jobs in France

BBC and others report that Renault is cutting about 7,500 jobs in France. Most of this will be from not replacing employees who retire or voluntarily leave.

7,500 is about 14% of their workforce in France.
Renault's new car registrations in France dropped 20% compared to last year.

Domestic Sales Plummet

Unlike many European car manufactures, the French manufacturers depend heavily on domestic sales.

Renault recently released their performance in France:

Renault Passenger Cars down 25% compared to with 2011.

Light Commercial Vehicles down 10% compared to 2011.

In part, the poor performance in passenger cars is due to Renault's aging fleet. Renault took a $5 billion gamble on electric cars. The large investment in EVs left them with little cash to invest elsewhere.

Z.E. hasn't sold well. They've sold about 9000 Twizy cars and 5000 Kangoo Z.E. vans. The Fluence sedan has sold in tiny numbers. The Zoe Z.E. should sell better, but is plagued by delays.

How many automobile manufactures can survive a 25% drop in sales?

RE: Renault to cut 7,500 jobs in France

Is it as simple as that? Ask your friends if they'd buy a Renault and hear their reply. It's not just the EV gamble but quality issues too. The Megane Scenic was a cracking seller but then it dried up when they replaced the car with the latest offering. People liked the old Clio but not the newer ones, though the latest looks great. Just hope it's not too late.
