Enfield Thunderbolt - BBC Radio 4

It would appear that us Fluence owners are not as pioneering as we thought. There was a two part programme on BBC Radio 4 this week about a British electric car built in 1973. It's amazing how quickly range anxiety takes hold of the presenter but when the recharge time was 36 hours you can see why! It also alleges that the car was killed off by the oil industry. Worth a listen.

The programme is available on iplayer for the next 4 days and there is a BBC web page that tells the story; links below:

RE: Enfield Thunderbolt - BBC Radio 4

I seem to think we've linked to the text story before here somewhere.

Yes, there are a few EVs dotted around recent and further history. Peugeot and Citroen produced a few in the 90's. Even Prince Phillip pottered around London in his Lucas Transit EV back in the 70's. Of course, all the land speed records prior to 1900 were in electric cars, and EV production was previously at its zenith in 1912 before Ford really took the car market by storm with mass produced 'gas' cars.

Clearly, though, we are in a 'new wave' that have been enabled by more advanced technology, at a time when environmentalists are looking for this sort of thing, and properly commercialised. Well, 'prepared for market' at least - I wonder how well they'd sell if they actually tried selling them!!
