Paris bans half of all cars from the road over pollution fears

We've probably all seen the news now:

Paris bans half of all cars from the road over pollution fears
From 5am only odd-numbered cars will be allowed to drive in the Ile-de-France, unless they have electric or hybrid motors. Taxis, buses, emergency vehicles and cars carrying three people or more are exempted. All trucks are banned.

If for one moment we sidestep the issue of whether cars are the worst offenders in this particular instance, it's fascinating to note that EVs are (as one might expect) exempt from the ban - though curiously this isn't being reported by the BBC, nor indeed the right wing press such as the Telegraph. Not that you'd expect any of the thornier issues relating to climate change to be reported by the Telegraph, not even now that arch halfwit James Delingpole has gone.

I mention it because we just have to have the same problem affect a number of other large cities around the globe, and for similar no-car policies to be put into effect, for EVs to make sense to a whole lot more people. Particularly in France, who make a lot of those EVs. It happened in the 1980s with diesels, when the fuel was a fraction the cost of petrol and delivered more miles for every gallon in your tank, and I'm wondering if we're likely to see EVs gaining popularity in the coming few years as air pollution gets worse.

Because it isn't going to get any better, is it.

So what is your pecking order for worst offenders? How about the 4x4 school run twice a day with macho femmes fatales at the wheel?

It's more that similar schemes in other large conurbations such as Mexico City have had no effect (see Googlable source, below), and thus it could be construed that the Paris authorities are making a knee jerk decision on the path of least resistance rather than trying to understand the problem better and not be short termist about it.

Nobody is saying that ICE cars don't pollute, as that is demonstrably not the case (in Mexico, they are responsible for most of the pollution), more that mechanisms the people in power employ to deal with the fact rarely produce the intended effect, and end up inconveniencing millions of people for no reason.
